Anaesthesia

Anaesthesia

Anaesthesiology, is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during and after surgery. Medicines are given to relieve pain, sensation and awareness during surgery to make it a hassel free and a pleasant experience. Anaesthesiologists at Nishka Healthcare are highly skilled in providing best care during surgery.

Preparedness for Surgery:

Before surgery, the physician(anaesthesiologist) will review your medical condition and history to plan the appropriate anaesthetic for surgery. On the day of surgery anaesthesia is only given under the close supervision of an anaesthetisiologist to give you an effective anaesthetic while keeping you safe and well.

Types of Anaesthesia:

1.Local Anaesthesia

Local anesthesia is an anesthetic agent given to temporarily to stop the sense of pain in a particular area of the body. You remain conscious during a local anesthetic. For minor surgery, a local anesthetic can be given via injection to the site to make it numb.

2.Regional Anaesthesia

Regional anaesthesia is used to numb only the portion of the body that will undergo the surgery. Usually an injection of local anaesthetic is given in the area of nerves that provide feeling to that part of the body. There are several forms of regional anaesthetics:

Spinal anaesthesia.

This procedure involves injecting a single dose of the anaesthetic medicine into the lower back(below the spinal cord), and causes numbness in the lower body. This type of anesthesia is most often commonly used in orthopedic procedures of the lower extremities.

Epidural anaesthesia.

The epidural anesthetic is similar to a spinal anaesthesia and is commonly used for surgery of the lower abdomen, pelvis, limbs and during labor. This type of anesthesia involves infusing an anesthetic medicine in the epidural region.

3.General Anaesthesia

General anaesthesia is an anaesthetic medicine that is used to induce unconsciousness during surgery. The medicine is either inhaled through a breathing mask or tube, or given through an intravenous line. Once the surgery is complete, the anesthesiologist will reverse the anaesthetic effect and shift to recovery room.

PAIN MANAGEMENT:

Medicines(analgesics) that are used via IV/IM route to reduce pain during surgery and keeps you comfortable.
